Welcome to Ometepe Spanish!
Learning Spanish abroad in Ometepe, Nicaragua
This is one of the new language immersion programs with a content based on Ometepe Island. Ometepe is a splendid two-volcano island located in the middle of a fresh water lake. This rising itself of the two volcanoes, Concepcion and Maderas, in the middle of Lake Nicaragua created the island. Ometepe is accessible both from Granada port and San Jorge port in Rivas. Ometepe volcanoes, Concepcion and Maderas, are great sites for hiking, exploration and sightseeing. The Conception volcano (5280 feet or1610 m height) forms the northern part of the island and is one of the most prominent volcanoes in Nicaragua, because of its almost perfect conical shape and its frequent small eruptions. To the south is Maderas volcano, shorter than Concepcion; it has 1,394 meters of height, and it is a dormant volcano whose last eruption occurred about a million of years ago. Maderas, however, is a natural park with a rich variety of flora and fauna and is the great for hiking, both easy and very challenging types of hiking.

Located on the southern beaches on the Pacific Ocean cost and only a few kilometers from the largest fresh water lake of the Nicaragua. Lake Cocibolca or Lake Nicaragua is the bigger of the two Great Lakes in the country, and the largest of the region. It is the 10th largest fresh water lake in the world. With an area of 8264 km², it is the third largest lake in Latin America only, slightly smaller than Lake Titicaca. Lake Nicaragua is so big that it has islands with volcanoes and archipelagos of islands, such as the two-volcano island of Ometepe and the archipelago of Solentiname Islands and Las Isletas.
Ometepe Island population is merely 40,000 inhabitants, distributed in two main small cities - Altagracia and Moyogalpa- and several other villages. Altagracia is easily reached from Granada port, but larger Moyogalpa is better accessed from San Jorge Port in Rivas. The island is a popular destination for its spectacular volcanoes, and is a great place for swimming and ecotourism. Ometepe is just a short distance from Costa Rica and is a great base for travel to other ports and islands in Lake Nicaragua; such as San Carlos town and Solentiname Archipelago.
Altagracia and Moyogalpa used to be tranquil fishing towns, whose populations were dedicated to economy based on banana plantation, fishing and livestock. The two cities -or better to say the whole island- are now playing a more important role in for the country economy in relation to tourism, as they has become main destinations for international tourists and real estate investors. Furthermore, both the archeological sites and the ecological farms are now main attraction for those seeking a relaxing time, sunny days and unknown pre-Columbian human traces. Ometepe is a quiet community that belongs to the locals and tourists love this reality.
